CINCINNATI – In a pivotal stretch of the season, two of the Cincinnati Reds’ key hitters are battling through challenges.
Elly De La Cruz has dealt with a nagging quad injury and his production has slipped, posting just a .685 OPS with one home run since July 1. Despite his struggles on defense, where he has committed three errors in his last five games, De La Cruz has yet to take a day off this year.
“It’s just how the season goes,” he said. “You have to stay mentally strong. No matter what happened yesterday, you show up ready the next day. I feel good, and I just want to keep playing.”
The Reds are counting on De La Cruz to regain his form in September as they chase a postseason berth. “We all want to make it,” he added. “That’s why you play this game. You’ve got to keep pushing.”
Meanwhile, Miguel Andujar is also managing a quad issue. After missing time and seeing limited action recently, he returned to the lineup against the Cardinals on Friday. “I feel way better now,” Andujar said. “I’ve worked hard to be ready for any situation and help the team however I can.”
Manager Terry Francona noted that Andujar’s mobility remains a concern. “He can’t run the way we need right now,” Francona explained. “It makes it tough to use him in certain spots, even though he’s a strong hitter.”
For the Reds to re-enter the playoff race, both De La Cruz and Andujar will need to contribute down the stretch despite their setbacks.
