Columbia, S.C. — Former South Carolina Gamecocks basketball standout Sindarius Thornwell has been arrested following an alleged domestic incident.
Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott confirmed that Thornwell was taken into custody Tuesday morning and charged with second-degree domestic violence and unlawful conduct toward a child.
According to investigators, the incident took place on August 12 at 8:30 p.m. The victim told deputies that Thornwell assaulted her while she was holding their young child. She reported that Thornwell threw a cup of water at her and struck her in the back of the head during an argument.
Thornwell denied hitting her but admitted to throwing the water. Deputies stated that evidence supported the victim’s account, which led to a warrant for his arrest. He was booked into the Richland County Detention Center.
Thornwell currently plays professional basketball in China for the Xinjiang Flying Tigers. He previously spent several seasons in the NBA, with his longest stint coming with the Los Angeles Clippers.
At South Carolina, Thornwell became one of the school’s most decorated players. He was named SEC Player of the Year in 2017, earned First-Team All-SEC honors, and led the Gamecocks to their first NCAA Final Four appearance. That season, he averaged 21.4 points per game and finished his career ranked third on the school’s all-time scoring list. He was selected 48th overall in the second round of the 2017 NBA Draft.
