Breaking news: North Carolina has made a bold move, naming veteran NBA agent Jim Tanner as the new general manager of its men’s basketball program—just weeks after head coach Hubert Davis emphasized the urgent need for stronger leadership and structure behind the scenes………….

Chapel Hill, NC – June 17, 2025 — In a significant and strategic move aimed at reshaping the future of its storied basketball program, the University of North Carolina has hired longtime NBA agent Jim Tanner as the general manager of men’s basketball. The announcement comes less than a month after head coach Hubert Davis emphasized the need for enhanced organizational leadership and infrastructure to support the program’s evolving demands.

Tanner, a well-respected figure in the professional basketball world, brings decades of experience managing high-profile NBA talent and navigating the complex landscape of modern sports management. His appointment signals a forward-thinking approach by UNC as college athletics continues to evolve with the growing influence of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals, the transfer portal, and heightened competition for top recruits.

“This is a powerful addition to our basketball family,” said Hubert Davis in a statement. “Jim’s experience, insight, and professionalism are second to none. He understands what it takes to succeed at the highest level, and his presence will help us operate with the structure and efficiency needed in today’s game.”

Tanner has represented numerous NBA stars through his agency, Tandem Sports + Entertainment, where he built a reputation for integrity, strategy, and athlete advocacy. His transition to college basketball marks a new chapter not only for him, but also for UNC, which is positioning itself as a national leader in adapting to the business side of collegiate athletics.

The general manager role, still relatively new in the college basketball landscape, is becoming increasingly essential. Programs across the country have begun appointing GMs to oversee roster construction, NIL opportunities, branding, and logistics—freeing head coaches to focus more on coaching and player development. Tanner will be expected to help manage recruiting strategy, oversee player relations, guide NIL negotiations, and maintain the long-term vision of the program alongside Coach Davis and the athletic department.

Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham praised the hire, calling Tanner “an exceptional addition who will elevate every aspect of our program. Jim’s leadership will allow us to support our student-athletes in new and meaningful ways, helping them grow both on and off the court.”

The move comes at a critical time for UNC. Following a rollercoaster few seasons under Davis, and with blue blood programs nationwide raising the stakes through big spending, elite recruiting, and innovative administrative structures, the Tar Heels are clearly aiming to remain ahead of the curve.

Tanner, a graduate of the University of North Carolina and the University of Chicago Law School, expressed his enthusiasm in a brief statement: “This is a full-circle moment. I’m honored to return to Chapel Hill in this role. My goal is to support our coaches, players, and staff in every way possible and help uphold the legacy of excellence that defines Carolina basketball.”

With one of the most respected names in basketball now guiding the program’s day-to-day operations, North Carolina’s message is clear: the future is here—and they intend to lead it.
