New York Yankees news
The New York Yankees dropped their Sunday night game to the Boston Red Sox but still secured the series win and maintained their strong position in the American League Wild Card race.
One of the standouts of the weekend was outfielder Cody Bellinger, who battled Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman in a nine-pitch at-bat on Saturday, coming out on top and drawing praise from teammates.
“That was sick,” infielder Jazz Chisholm said, noting how tough Chapman’s fastball is to hit.
Bellinger has been a consistent presence for the Yankees all season, but his future in pinstripes is uncertain. With his performance this year, he is widely expected to decline his $25 million player option for next season and test free agency for a longer-term contract. That would force the Yankees to either make a significant financial commitment to keep him or risk losing him to another team.
Captain Aaron Judge made his stance clear, calling Bellinger “underrated” and stressing how important he has been to the team.
“I don’t think he gets enough credit for what he does for this team,” Judge said.
Bellinger is currently hitting .276/.332/.496 with 28 home runs, ranking second only to Judge in hits, runs, and RBIs for the Yankees this year. His production has made him one of the most reliable players in the lineup.
Still, with his value rising, it remains uncertain whether the Yankees will be willing to match what other teams might offer him in free agency.
