Breaking News: WVU Baseball Appoints Legendary Figure Jedd Gyorko as New Head Coach
Morgantown, West Virginia – June 16, 2025
In a major homecoming move that has energized Mountaineer Nation, West Virginia University (WVU) has officially named Jedd Gyorko as the new head coach of the Mountaineers baseball program. The former MLB veteran and WVU legend is set to take the reins of the team he once led as a standout collegiate star.
Gyorko, 36, played for the Mountaineers from 2008 to 2010 and is considered one of the greatest players in program history. A two-time All-American and former Big East Player of the Year, Gyorko set multiple school records before being drafted in the first round by the San Diego Padres in 2010. He went on to enjoy an eight-year MLB career with stints at the Padres, Cardinals, Brewers, and Dodgers.
“Coming back to Morgantown is truly special,” Gyorko said at his introductory press conference. “This program gave me everything, and now I’m ready to give everything back as its leader. My goal is simple: to build a championship culture right here at WVU.”
The hiring follows the departure of longtime head coach Randy Mazey, who announced his retirement earlier this year after more than a decade of success with the Mountaineers. Athletic Director Wren Baker expressed full confidence in Gyorko’s leadership and connection to the program:
“Jedd embodies what it means to be a Mountaineer. He brings a wealth of professional experience, a fierce competitive spirit, and a deep love for this university. We’re thrilled to welcome him home.”
Since retiring from professional baseball, Gyorko has already built up coaching experience, having managed in the MLB Draft League and worked in player development. His reputation as a student of the game and mentor has made him a rising star in coaching circles.
WVU fans, alumni, and players have expressed overwhelming excitement on social media, with many celebrating the appointment as the beginning of a new era.
“He’s the perfect fit—he knows what it takes to win here,” said former teammate and current MLB analyst Alex Presley. “WVU just got stronger.”
Gyorko will begin his duties immediately, with summer recruiting and fall training preparations underway.
