What are the Cardinals going to do this summer?
With a new front office about to take charge of the St. Louis Cardinals, questions arise about which players will remain as the team heads into the 2026 season.
Some players seem secure, such as Masyn Winn, Michael McGreevy, Willson Contreras (who has a no-trade clause and wants to stay), and Victor Scott II. However, starting pitcher Sonny Gray, who also has a no-trade clause, continues to be linked to trade rumors despite his desire to remain with the team.
The uncertainty largely stems from the unknown vision of new GM Chaim Bloom. St. Louis Post-Dispatch writer Lynn Worthy argues that while trading Gray could improve the team’s postseason chances, it’s not a necessity. Gray is owed $35 million next season, with a club option for 2027 valued at $30 million plus a $5 million buyout if declined.
Gray’s impact on the team is significant. Since last season, the Cardinals have gone 36-18 in games he started, but overall, the team’s record since 2024 stands just above .500 at 147-146.
The Cardinals must decide whether to trade Gray and rebuild or keep him and hope for another strong season together.
