“Mavericks Legend Dirk Nowitzki Breaks Silence on Shocking Luka Doncic Trade to Lakers — Reflects on Its Impact”
Dirk Nowitzki, the legendary Hall of Famer who spent his entire 20-year career with the Dallas Mavericks, is still processing the shocking trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers last season.
The move stunned the basketball world — and even Mavericks CEO Rick Welts initially thought the news was a prank. The blockbuster deal brought All-Star center Anthony Davis to Dallas, while Doncic began a new chapter in Los Angeles.
Speaking with fellow Hall of Famer Steve Nash on Let’s Talk, Nowitzki shared how the moment caught him completely off guard.
“Nobody saw this coming. This wasn’t just basketball news — it was everywhere,” Nowitzki said. “I was traveling when it happened, and it was all over TV. It was such a big deal. In the NBA, unexpected things happen all the time, and that’s part of what keeps it interesting.”
Nowitzki acknowledged the emotional difficulty of the situation. His loyalty to the Mavericks runs deep, but his respect and admiration for Doncic remains strong.
“Of course I want to support Luka, but I’m also a Maverick for life,” he said. “It was tough. I want the best for Luka in L.A., and I think he’ll have a great career there. And the Mavs? They’ve moved on, they got the first pick — so I hope both sides can do well from here.”
Mavericks CEO Rick Welts also spoke candidly about the trade, admitting that while the decision wasn’t easy, it was made with the team’s long-term future in mind.
“You can’t let fear or regret guide you in this business,” Welts said. “What stood out to me most was just how deep the fans’ connection is to this team. That was a positive. It’s something we can rebuild, and maybe even faster than expected.”
The Mavericks are entering a new era, led by #1 overall pick Cooper Flagg, who is set to debut this upcoming season. Meanwhile, Doncic’s presence in L.A. is already generating buzz as fans from both coasts look forward to what should be one of the most talked-about NBA seasons in years.
