The Cincinnati Reds hosted the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday as part of a full Labor Day MLB slate, and it didn’t take long for Elly De La Cruz to provide a highlight.
In the top of the first inning, George Springer led off with a single and then stole second, giving Toronto an early scoring chance. But De La Cruz quickly shut it down. On the very next at-bat, Addison Barger lined a ball up the middle that looked destined to score Springer. Instead, De La Cruz leapt to make the catch, then dove back to second base to double off Springer.
The spectacular play not only energized the crowd but also gave the Reds an important defensive boost at a crucial point in their season. Cincinnati entered the game four games out of the final National League Wild Card spot, making every out count.
For Reds fans, it was another reminder of De La Cruz’s athleticism and ability to deliver game-changing moments.
