The Cincinnati Reds snapped a five-game losing streak on Sunday with a 7-4 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. The victory was highlighted by home runs from Matt McLain—his second in consecutive games—and Austin Hays, as well as another two-hit performance from Ke’Bryan Hayes. It was the team’s highest-scoring game since their 8-10 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers over two weeks ago.
During that stretch, the Reds’ offense has faltered, losing three straight series and suffering their first sweep of the season at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Overall, they’ve gone 2-8 in their last 10 games, managing three or fewer runs in six of those contests.
While the Reds’ bats have struggled, top prospect Sal Stewart has been red-hot since his promotion to Triple-A Louisville on July 18. Over 38 games with the Louisville Bats, Stewart has slashed .315/.394/.629 with 15 doubles, 10 home runs, and 36 RBI. He has also drawn 19 walks while striking out just 26 times. Given his strong performance, many expected him to be called up earlier, but the Reds waited until September roster expansions to make the move.
Although the team has not officially announced the promotion, reports indicate Stewart’s call-up is imminent. Once in Cincinnati, he is expected to play multiple positions across the infield, as he has been gaining experience everywhere except shortstop during his time in Triple-A. The Reds hope his addition will spark an offense that has been inconsistent since the All-Star break.
For Cincinnati, the move may prove crucial. Their playoff hopes have been slipping in recent weeks, and Stewart’s arrival could provide the lift they desperately need.
