CINCINNATI NEWS: “Good and Bad News” Cincinnati Reds Facing Key Player Departures and New contracts Amid Roster Changes
The Cincinnati Reds are undergoing a significant roster shake-up, with several high-profile moves raising questions about the club’s future direction.
Veteran left-hander Wade Miley has opted out of his minor league contract, electing free agency as he continues his comeback from Tommy John surgery. Miley, 38, chose to pursue other opportunities after the Reds showed no immediate plans to promote him to the big-league roster.

Meanwhile, the team has designated infielder Jeimer Candelario for assignment, just halfway into a three-year, $45 million deal. Candelario struggled to find his rhythm at the plate and was overshadowed by younger infield options, forcing the Reds to cut ties despite the financial hit.
Another notable departure already confirmed is former closer Alexis Díaz, who was claimed off waivers by the Atlanta Braves after a brief stint with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Díaz’s exit closes the chapter on what was once a promising role with the Reds bullpen.
Not all news has been departures, however. The Reds recently secured catcher Jose Trevino on a three-year extension that runs through 2027, with a club option for 2028. Trevino’s deal signals the organization’s commitment to experienced leadership behind the plate.

As for rising star Elly De La Cruz, contract extension talks have taken place, but no agreement has been finalized. De La Cruz remains under team control through 2029, giving the Reds time to negotiate a long-term deal. Fellow cornerstone Tyler Stephenson is signed through 2026, though speculation continues about a potential extension.
With some veterans moving on and young talents stepping into bigger roles, the 2026 season is shaping up to be a decisive one for the franchise.
