Cardinals’ All-Star Brendan Donovan Nearing Return After Groin Injury
St. Louis Cardinals fans may soon see one of their most reliable players back on the field. All-Star utility man Brendan Donovan, who has been sidelined since mid-August with a left groin strain, is moving closer to a return as the team pushes through September.
Donovan completed a full workout on Monday, testing his mobility with fielding, hitting, and base running drills. He repeated the session on Tuesday without any setbacks, a key step toward beginning a rehab assignment in the coming days. If his recovery continues as expected, the versatile 28-year-old could rejoin the Cardinals lineup later this month.
Manager Oli Marmol praised Donovan’s resilience, noting how much the team has missed his bat and leadership: “Brendan sets the tone for us offensively. Getting him back would give this lineup an immediate boost as we fight to finish the season strong.”
Before the injury, Donovan was enjoying a breakout 2025 campaign, highlighted by his first career All-Star selection. He leads the team in on-base percentage and remains a steady defensive presence across the infield and outfield.
While trade speculation has swirled around Donovan’s future in St. Louis, his imminent return gives the Cardinals a much-needed lift as they try to close out the year on a competitive note.
