Yankees Face Playoff Rotation Decision as Aaron Judge Praises Cam Schlittler
New York Yankees rookie pitcher Cam Schlittler has exceeded expectations in his debut season. Drafted in the seventh round in 2022, the 6-foot-6 right-hander dominated in the minors before earning a call-up in July to replace injured starter Clarke Schmidt.
Since joining the rotation, Schlittler has continued to impress. After delivering seven strong innings against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday, his ERA sits at 2.96 across 73 innings, with 84 strikeouts and just 58 hits allowed.
The Yankees now face a difficult decision: whether Schlittler or Luis Gil, last year’s American League Rookie of the Year, will serve as the team’s third starter in the postseason. Gil is slated to pitch Sunday in the regular-season finale against Baltimore, a game that will determine if New York wins the AL East and advances directly to the Division Series or must compete in a wild-card round.
Captain Aaron Judge offered high praise for the 24-year-old after Saturday’s performance.
“I love it. He’s been impressive all year,” Judge said. “Each start he’s becoming a better pitcher, reading swings and knowing what to throw.”
Manager Aaron Boone also indicated confidence in Schlittler, saying he would trust the rookie in a playoff start if necessary.
Regardless of the decision, the Yankees’ rotation looks formidable. Max Fried and Carlos Rodón are set to start the first two playoff games, giving New York a strong foundation as October approaches.
