Max Fried, Jazz Chisholm Power Yankees Past Red Sox 5–3
BOSTON (AP) — Max Fried picked up his major league-leading 17th win and Jazz Chisholm Jr. continued his hot streak at the plate, leading the New York Yankees to a 5–3 win over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night at Fenway Park.
Fried (17–5) worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on nine hits. He carried a shutout into the fifth before Alex Bregman homered for Boston. Jarren Duran later added a solo shot in the eighth, but the Yankees’ offense gave Fried plenty of support.
Chisholm finished with three hits, including a solo homer, and drove in three runs. He now sits one home run shy of joining the Yankees’ exclusive 30–30 club — 30 homers and 30 stolen bases — a feat achieved only by Alfonso Soriano in 2002 and 2003.
Cody Bellinger doubled in a key insurance run in the ninth, driving home Aaron Judge, who had singled and advanced on a wild pitch. David Bednar closed things out in the ninth for his 24th save.
Boston starter Brayan Bello (11–7) was tagged for two runs in the first inning as New York sent eight batters to the plate.
The Red Sox rallied in the sixth with three straight singles that trimmed the deficit to 4–2, but reliever Luke Weaver struck out back-to-back hitters to escape the jam.
The victory was the Yankees’ third straight over Boston, snapping a skid of eight consecutive losses to their rivals. The win pushed New York 2 1/2 games ahead of the Red Sox in the battle for the American League’s top Wild Card spot — a position that would secure home-field advantage in a potential playoff matchup between the two clubs.
