Dewitt Jr. Holds Talks with Nolan Arenado as Star Third Baseman Decides to Leave Cardinals
St. Louis Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. has reportedly held private discussions with Nolan Arenado following the All-Star third baseman’s decision to change course on his future with the franchise.
According to sources close to the organization, Arenado—who previously expressed commitment to St. Louis—has now decided to part ways with the team. The move comes after weeks of reflection on the Cardinals’ recent struggles and his own career goals.
DeWitt confirmed that conversations have taken place, noting the difficulty of the situation.
“Nolan has been a tremendous player for us and a true professional,” DeWitt said. “We’ve had open and honest talks about his future, and while we hoped he would continue his journey here, we understand the reasons behind his decision.”
While specific details remain private, Arenado is believed to have cited a combination of factors, including the team’s performance, his personal ambitions, and a desire for a new challenge at this stage of his career.
Arenado, 34, joined the Cardinals in 2021 via trade from the Colorado Rockies and quickly became a cornerstone of the infield. Over his four seasons in St. Louis, he earned multiple All-Star selections and Gold Gloves while becoming a fan favorite.
Despite his decision to leave, Arenado expressed nothing but gratitude for his time with the Cardinals.
“This wasn’t easy,” Arenado said in a statement. “I love my teammates, the fans, and this city. Playing in St. Louis has been a blessing, but I feel it’s the right time for me to move on. I’ll carry great memories with me, and I’ll always appreciate the support I received here.”
DeWitt described the talks as respectful and heartfelt, adding that the organization will now focus on the future.
The Cardinals are expected to begin evaluating trade or transition options in the coming weeks as one of the game’s premier third basemen prepares for the next chapter in his career.
