St. Louis Cardinals news
The San Francisco Giants are reportedly showing offseason trade interest in St. Louis Cardinals ace Sonny Gray, according to team insider Susan Slusser.
Gray, 35, impressed on Sunday by carrying a no-hitter into the sixth inning before finishing with 5 1/3 innings pitched, two hits, three runs allowed, and six strikeouts. His performance helped St. Louis secure a 4-3 win over the Giants, taking two out of three in the series and moving closer to the final National League Wild Card spot, now trailing the Mets by 4 ½ games.
Looking toward 2026, Gray may not fit seamlessly with a young and developing Cardinals roster. For St. Louis, he could represent more value as a trade piece than as a long-term rotation anchor.
Slusser noted that the Giants are targeting veteran pitching depth, particularly if Justin Verlander does not re-sign. “Gray is precisely the type of starter the Giants are likely to target this season, especially if Verlander does not return. They’d like another veteran to pair with Logan Webb and Robbie Ray,” she wrote.
Gray brings a strong résumé: in 13 MLB seasons, he has twice finished in the top three for the Cy Young Award. Across his last two seasons with St. Louis, he’s compiled a 26-17 record, 4.15 ERA, and 382 strikeouts. While his ERA this year is his highest since 2021, he still offers quality and durability that could benefit a veteran-hungry Giants staff.
However, any trade would ultimately require Gray’s approval, as his no-trade clause gives him the power to block a move.
