Atlanta Braves outfielder Marcell Ozuna has pledged $5 million from his latest sponsorship deals to address homelessness in Atlanta. The initiative will create 100 permanent housing units and 200 emergency shelter beds for families and individuals in need.
At a press event, Ozuna spoke emotionally about his decision:
“Atlanta gave me everything — love, energy, belief. Now it’s my turn to give back. I can’t stand by knowing families are sleeping outside in this city.”
A Holistic Approach
The funding will support both immediate and long-term solutions. Beyond housing and shelter beds, the project will include career training, mental health counseling, and healthcare access, aiming to help residents regain stability.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens praised Ozuna’s commitment, calling it a “game-changing investment in the people of Atlanta.”
Support From the Braves
The Braves organization and Ozuna’s teammates have also voiced support. Manager Brian Snitker described the donation as an example of Ozuna’s leadership, while Ronald Acuña Jr. commended his teammate for fighting for the community off the field.
Addressing a Growing Crisis
According to the Atlanta Continuum of Care, more than 3,000 people experience homelessness on any given night in the city. Rising housing costs have worsened the situation, and local nonprofit leaders believe Ozuna’s contribution could inspire others to act.
Fans have also celebrated Ozuna’s gesture online, calling it a proud moment for both the Braves and the city of Atlanta.
Looking Ahead
Ozuna revealed that this donation is only the first step. He plans to launch a charitable foundation focused on housing, education, and youth sports in Atlanta.
“This is step one,” Ozuna said. “My goal is to leave a legacy off the field just as strong as the one I’m building on it.”
