New York Yankees news
The New York Yankees have confirmed what many fans suspected: Anthony Volpe’s struggles this season are linked to more than just performance.
According to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, Volpe has been playing through a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder. The injury dates back to May 3, when he felt a “pop” during a diving play. Since then, he has received multiple cortisone injections, including during the All-Star break and again this week. Manager Aaron Boone revealed that a recent MRI showed “a little bit more of a labrum tear,” but the team does not expect him to go on the injured list.
The injury has clearly impacted his production. Before May, Volpe hit .233 with 10 doubles and five home runs in 33 games. Since then, he has posted a .197/.248/.378 line over 108 games and currently leads the American League with 19 errors. While Boone maintains that Volpe is still the team’s starting shortstop, José Caballero has started to see more opportunities. Surgery is not planned at this time, though further testing is expected after the season.
Volpe missed the final two games against Detroit and was out of the lineup again for Friday’s opener at Fenway Park against the Red Sox.
Understanding the Injury
The labrum is a rim of cartilage that helps stabilize the shoulder joint. When torn, it can fray or detach, leading to pain, instability, and reduced strength. For a shortstop, this affects both throwing ability and swing mechanics. Treatments can range from injections to surgery, depending on the severity.
Impact on the Yankees
Volpe has said he feels “in a good spot” and praised the team’s medical staff, but the effects on his power, timing, and defense since May have been obvious. Boone has downplayed the injury as the only cause of his struggles, but it remains a major storyline as the Yankees push for the postseason.
Whether the team leans more on Caballero or sticks with Volpe at less than full strength, his condition could play a pivotal role in how far the Yankees go this year. For fans, it’s clear: this is not a minor setback, but a structural issue with serious consequences.
