Detroit tigers news
The New York Yankees confirmed what many fans suspected: Anthony Volpe’s struggles this season are linked to more than just performance issues.
As first reported by MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch, Volpe has been playing through a partially torn labrum in his left shoulder, an injury dating back to a diving play on May 3 when he felt a “pop.” Since then, he has received multiple cortisone injections, including one during the All-Star break and another this week. Manager Aaron Boone revealed that a recent MRI showed “a little bit more of a labrum tear,” though the team does not expect him to go on the injured list.
The timeline of his production reflects the impact. Before the injury, Volpe hit .233 with 10 doubles and five home runs in 33 games. Since then, his numbers have dipped to .197/.248/.378 over 108 games, and he now leads the American League with 19 errors. While Boone insists Volpe remains their starting shortstop, José Caballero has begun seeing more opportunities. Surgery is not currently planned, but Volpe will undergo further testing after the season.
Volpe missed the final two games against Detroit and was also out of the lineup for Friday’s opener at Fenway Park versus the Red Sox.
Understanding the Injury
The labrum is a rim of cartilage that deepens the shoulder socket, helping stabilize the joint. When torn, it can fray, peel, or detach, making movement painful and less stable. For a shortstop, this directly affects throwing strength and swing mechanics. Treatment options range from rest and injections to surgery, depending on severity.
Impact on the Yankees
Volpe has said he feels “in a good spot” and praised communication with the team’s staff, but his decline in power, timing, and defense has been evident since May. Boone downplays the injury as the sole reason for his struggles, yet it remains a central storyline as the Yankees push for the postseason.
Whether the team leans more on Caballero or sticks with Volpe at less than full health, the shortstop’s condition could play a decisive role in the Yankees’ season. For fans, the takeaway is clear: this is not a minor issue but a structural injury that carries significant consequences.
