The Detroit Tigers have been dealing with a wave of injuries that thinned both their pitching rotation and outfield depth, but the team is optimistic about several players making their way back before season’s end.
Relief pitcher Kyle Finnegan, sidelined since early September with a right adductor strain, is progressing through his throwing program and could rejoin the bullpen in the coming weeks. Outfielder Matt Vierling, who landed on the 10-day injured list with a strained oblique, is being evaluated on a day-to-day basis and remains a candidate for a late-September return.
On the pitching front, starter Jose Urquidy continues his comeback from Tommy John surgery. While his timeline remains cautious, the Tigers have not ruled out a September appearance, which would provide a much-needed boost to the rotation. Fellow reliever Paul Sewald is also in the midst of rehab work after a right shoulder strain, with the club hopeful he can contribute again before the year closes.
Not all the updates are as positive. Reese Olson (shoulder strain) and Alex Cobb (hip inflammation) are unlikely to return this season, while prospect Jackson Jobe underwent Tommy John surgery and is expected to miss all of 2025.
Despite the setbacks, Detroit’s staff believes that reinforcements arriving in the final stretch could strengthen their push to finish the season on a high note. Manager and coaches remain focused on balancing player health with the team’s competitive aspirations.
