The Atlanta Braves have claimed infielder Ha-Seong Kim off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays, a move first reported by The Athletic. To clear space, Atlanta transferred injured third baseman Austin Riley to the 60-day IL. Kim, signed by Tampa Bay last offseason on a two-year, $29 million deal, is owed about $2 million this year and holds a $16 million player option for 2026.

Kim had been expected to rebound from 2024 shoulder surgery but has struggled since returning in July, hitting just .214 with recurring back issues. The Rays, facing stadium damage costs, ownership changes, and payroll uncertainty, opted to cut ties while shifting focus to top prospect Carson Williams.
For Atlanta, the move reflects a strategy to prepare for 2026 after a disappointing season. With shortstop Nick Allen providing elite defense but minimal offense, Kim offers a low-risk, potentially high-reward option. If he opts into his 2026 salary, the Braves could secure an experienced infielder at a manageable cost; if not, the financial loss is minimal.
