The St. Louis Cardinals have announced that outfielder Alec Burleson will be placed on the 10-day injured list due to a lingering right wrist injury. Burleson, 26, has been a key contributor for the Cardinals this season, leading the team with 123 hits while batting .286 with 16 home runs and 60 RBIs through 122 games.
He had previously missed a game last week because of the same wrist issue and was forced to exit Thursday’s matchup against the Pittsburgh Pirates early, highlighting the severity of his condition.
In response, the Cardinals are calling up two players from Triple-A Memphis to strengthen the roster. Catcher Jimmy Crooks, 24, ranked as the team’s No. 6 prospect by MLB.com, has yet to make his major league debut. Crooks has been putting up solid numbers in the minors, batting .274 with 14 home runs and 79 RBIs in 98 games this season.
Infielder Cesar Prieto, 26, is also being promoted and is off to an impressive Triple-A campaign, hitting .295 with nine home runs and 62 RBIs over 107 games. Both players are expected to add depth to the Cardinals’ lineup and provide much-needed support while Burleson recovers.
The Cardinals face a critical stretch of games in the coming weeks, and the absence of Burleson could impact their offensive production. Fans will be watching closely to see how Crooks and Prieto adapt to the major league level and whether they can help the team maintain its competitive edge during this period.
