Why the Lions Should Prioritize a More Reliable Pro Bowl Talent Over the Inconsistent and Overhyped Jadeveon Clowney

Following Jadeveon Clowney’s release by the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, speculation about the veteran edge rusher’s next landing spot has surged across NFL circles. Detroit Lions fans quickly joined the conversation, with many advocating for their team to pursue the three-time Pro Bowler.

However, the fanbase isn’t united on the idea. While there’s broad agreement that Detroit needs to bolster its pass rush, concerns linger about Clowney’s potential salary demands and whether he fits into the locker room culture Dan Campbell has built. With the possibility of Za’Darius Smith returning to the Motor City still in play, it’s worth questioning whether Clowney is even the right target.

Even if Smith doesn’t return, the Lions may have a better option in free agency: Matthew Judon. The former Ravens and Patriots standout, now a free agent after a stint with the Falcons, offers a more compelling combination of leadership, production, and potential affordability than Clowney.

Clowney has remained productive in recent years, but his reputation as a journeyman is hard to ignore. Since leaving the Texans, he’s played for five different teams in six seasons and often left on poor terms—most notably in Cleveland, where he publicly criticized his role before being released. For a team that prioritizes character and culture as much as the Lions do, Clowney’s track record raises red flags.

Judon, despite a quieter 2024 season, still recorded 5.5 sacks, 9 quarterback hits, and 7 tackles for loss. He’s a proven leader and could likely be signed to a more team-friendly deal than Clowney. For a team on the cusp of contention, Judon offers both a safer cultural fit and a potentially higher upside. Detroit would be wise to prioritize him in free agency.
