Lakers’ Luka Doncic Signs Contract Extension Through 2028
August 2, 2025 — Luka Doncic has signed a three-year, $165 million maximum contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, securing his future with the team through the 2027–2028 NBA season. The agreement means Doncic will forgo the opportunity to enter free agency next summer.
The deal includes what would have been a player option for the 2026–27 season under his previous contract. Though the Lakers have not publicly confirmed the contract details, a source familiar with the negotiations verified them on condition of anonymity.
Doncic expressed his excitement about the new deal on social media, writing:
“Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud. Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates, and all the fans who’ve shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning.”
The Slovenian star was acquired by Los Angeles in a high-profile trade with the Dallas Mavericks last February, which sent Anthony Davis to Dallas. Since then, Doncic has made a strong impact, averaging 28.2 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.7 rebounds per game. He helped lead the Lakers to 50 wins and a No. 3 seed in the Western Conference, although they were eliminated in the first round by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Despite the early playoff exit, Doncic has embraced his new home in Los Angeles. He is set to return this fall alongside LeBron James, who will be starting his record-breaking 23rd NBA season.
During the offseason, Doncic has already made his influence felt off the court. He played a key role in helping the Lakers recruit Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart, both of whom are expected to strengthen the team’s title chances this season.
Doncic’s offseason has also included a rigorous conditioning program, a notable change after previous concerns in Dallas regarding his physical preparedness. Those doubts reportedly contributed to his unexpected exit from the Mavericks.
With this new extension, the Lakers are doubling down on Doncic as a central figure in their long-term championship ambitions.
