Vikings Still Overlooking Clear Fix for Secondary Struggles
As the 2025 season nears, the Minnesota Vikings continue to face scrutiny over their lack of depth at cornerback. While offseason additions like Isaiah Rodgers and Jeff Okudah offer potential, questions remain about whether they can stabilize the defensive backfield.
NFL analyst Kevin Patra recently suggested that free agent cornerback Asante Samuel Jr. could be the ideal solution. Samuel, formerly of the Los Angeles Chargers, brings both experience and playmaking ability—traits the Vikings’ secondary sorely needs. Patra noted that his opinion shifted after comments from Asante Samuel Sr., who implied his son might be a better fit elsewhere than Miami. Minnesota, he concluded, seemed like the right place.
“The Vikings have uncertainty at cornerback beyond Pro Bowler Byron Murphy,” Patra explained. “Mekhi Blackmon is recovering from an ACL injury, Okudah hasn’t lived up to expectations, and Rodgers is coming off a full-season suspension. Samuel Jr. has tackling concerns and injury history, but he’s a talented fit for Brian Flores’ system.”
Samuel, 25, has started 50 games over four years in the NFL and boasts 176 tackles, six interceptions, and 37 pass breakups. A shoulder injury early last season likely contributed to his availability in free agency. If not for that setback, he might still be with the Chargers.
The Vikings already appear content with their current depth, especially with defensive coordinator Brian Flores praising both Rodgers and Okudah in training camp. Murphy and a recovering Blackmon are also expected to start.
Still, with last year’s pass defense ranking 28th in the league—giving up an average of 242 yards per game—many believe the Vikings missed an opportunity by not drafting a high-end corner or safety. Samuel could step in as the lockdown defender the team has lacked, especially as the franchise looks ahead to a future without veteran safety Harrison Smith.
A single phone call to Samuel’s agent could be the key to transforming the Vikings from playoff hopefuls into serious Super Bowl contenders.
