Rangers Insider Suggests Bold Approach on Corey Seager and Jacob deGrom
Texas Rangers insider Evan Grant has proposed that the team remain open to possible trade discussions involving stars Corey Seager and Jacob deGrom. Grant emphasized that the Rangers are not actively shopping either player but argued that listening to offers may be necessary if payroll concerns begin limiting the team’s ability to improve the roster.
Grant, the longtime Rangers beat reporter for the Dallas Morning News, shared his perspective during an appearance on the “Foul Territory” show.
He noted that if the Rangers face pressure to reduce salary while still aiming to add top talent, they cannot immediately dismiss inquiries from other clubs.
Grant acknowledged that moving Jacob deGrom would be extremely difficult due to the veteran pitcher’s full no-trade clause. DeGrom, now 37, missed much of the 2023 and 2024 seasons due to injuries but returned in 2025 to earn the AL Comeback Player of the Year Award.
Seager, meanwhile, currently has limited no-trade protection. That will change next season when he earns “10-and-5 rights,” which will allow him to veto any trade. Seager joined Texas on a 10-year, $325 million contract in December 2021 and surpassed 10 years of MLB service time in 2025.
Thoughts on the Rangers’ Recent Trade
Despite raising the possibility of entertaining offers, Grant said he does not expect the Rangers to move either star—particularly after acquiring Brandon Nimmo from the Mets in exchange for Marcus Semien. He explained that the trade benefits Texas in the short term by saving approximately $11 million while adding an immediate contributor to the outfield.
Grant added that pushing further cost-cutting measures would significantly damage the team’s chances of contending for another championship. He believes that if such a situation develops, the responsibility will fall on president of baseball operations Chris Young to work closely with owner Ray Davis on the organization’s long-term direction.
