The Texas Rangers have made their most aggressive move of the offseason, placing a $185 million contract offer on the table for ace right-hander Corbin Burnes, according to league sources familiar with the negotiations. While the deal is not confirmed as finalized, industry insiders note that Texas has emerged as one of the heaviest bidders for the former Cy Young winner.
Burnes, 30, is the premier frontline starter available on the market and has drawn interest from several contenders—including the Dodgers, Orioles, and Cardinals—but the Rangers’ offer marks one of the largest long-term pitching proposals issued so far this winter. The commitment aligns with what many executives predicted Burnes would command: a deal in the $180–$220 million range.
Why the Rangers Are All-In
Texas entered the offseason with a clear and urgent need for starting pitching. The rotation dealt with major injuries last season, including lengthy absences from Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer, and Tyler Mahle. With deGrom not expected back until mid-season and the team determined to keep its World Series window open, the Rangers targeted Burnes as their top priority.
Burnes posted another elite campaign in 2025, finishing with a sub-3.00 ERA, elite strikeout rate, and over 200 innings pitched—the type of stability Texas desperately needs.
A Deal That Fits the Market
The reported $185 million structure aligns with the modern market for high-end frontline starters. Burnes is expected to secure:
- At least 6–7 years
- An annual salary above $25–30 million
- Full or partial no-trade protection
The Rangers’ offer reportedly meets all competitive benchmarks.

Where Negotiations Stand
While Burnes has not accepted the offer, insiders say Texas is “optimistic” about their position, noting that:
- Burnes remains open to joining a contender with a strong offensive core.
- The Rangers’ aggressive spending in recent years signals long-term commitment.
- Texas presents one of the best paths back to the postseason for a pitcher seeking another deep October run.
What This Means for the Rangers
If the deal is completed, Burnes would immediately become the ace of the Rangers rotation, forming a high-powered tandem with deGrom once he returns. Texas would also re-establish itself as one of the MLB’s most aggressive, win-now franchises.
Until a decision is made, however, the Rangers remain locked in a competitive, high-stakes bidding war.
