The Philadelphia Phillies appear to be in a strong position to keep star slugger Kyle Schwarber this offseason—a move that would be considered a major success for the organization.
Schwarber is coming off an outstanding 2025 campaign, finishing second in the National League MVP voting after hitting 56 home runs and driving in 132 runs. The 32-year-old played all 162 games, further proving his durability and importance to Philadelphia’s lineup since joining the club in 2022.
According to a report from ESPN insider Jeff Passan, the Phillies are currently viewed as the leading contenders to bring Schwarber back. Passan also noted that the Boston Red Sox, Cincinnati Reds, and New York Mets remain involved in the pursuit.
Passan described Schwarber as “the bellwether of the class,” explaining that the veteran’s market is strong and that he is expected to secure both significant years and annual salary. He added that Schwarber might be the first major free agent to sign this offseason, and suggested it would be surprising if he remains unsigned after the MLB Winter Meetings conclude.

This year’s Winter Meetings begin on December 7 in Orlando, Florida. Passan’s assessment is an encouraging sign for Philadelphia, especially with the possibility that Schwarber’s decision could come soon.
Keeping Schwarber would provide stability and firepower as the Phillies look ahead to the 2026 season.
