BREAKING NEWS: New Role for Bruce Bochy. Deal finalized

Giants Finalizing Deal With Bruce Bochy for Special Assistant Role
November 5, 2025 —

Bruce Bochy is close to rejoining the San Francisco Giants in an advisory capacity. CEO Greg Johnson told The San Francisco Chronicle that discussions were underway earlier this week, and Bochy confirmed to The Athletic that he is finalizing a deal to become a special assistant. He will serve as a resource for first-year manager Tony Vitello, joining Dusty Baker as one of the Giants’ special assistants.

The 70-year-old Bochy spent the past three seasons managing the Texas Rangers, leading them to a World Series title in 2023—his fourth championship overall. He previously guided the Giants to three championships between 2010 and 2014. During his 13 seasons managing in San Francisco, Bochy worked closely with former star catcher and current team president Buster Posey. Only John McGraw, who managed the franchise from 1902 to 1932, has more wins in Giants history.

Bochy suggested that his managerial career may be finished, telling The Athletic: “I would say that’s where I’m at right now. You never rule anything out, but I’m content with what I’m doing now. I want more time for myself and my family while still contributing to the game I love.”

With 2,252 career managerial wins across his tenures with the Padres, Giants, and Rangers, Bochy ranks sixth all-time. He and Baker are the only two managers in the top ten not yet inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, largely because both have managed recently. They’ll be eligible for consideration by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee once officially retired, likely in the 2026–27 offseason.

In related coaching news, Jayce Tingler—formerly the Minnesota Twins’ bench coach—will join Vitello’s staff in San Francisco. Tingler managed the Padres from 2020 to 2021 and spent the past four seasons working under Rocco Baldelli in Minnesota. He and Vitello were teammates at the University of Missouri in the early 2000s.
