Stephen A. Smith Says LeBron James Should Finish Career in Cleveland
LeBron James, at age 40, could have retired years ago and still been regarded as one of the top two players in NBA history. Instead, he’s preparing for the 2025-26 season after opting into his Los Angeles Lakers contract. While there’s no indication the Lakers want to move on from him, James has a no-trade clause and would need to request a move himself if he wanted one.
Stephen A. Smith believes James should return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, arguing it would give him a better shot at another championship than staying in Los Angeles. Smith points to the difficult Western Conference path and says Cleveland could be favorites to win the East with James.
Smith also suggested that if James won another title in Cleveland, he should retire afterward — tying Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan with five championships. However, James hasn’t given any sign that he plans to retire soon, and it’s unlikely he would do so without a farewell season.
The Cavaliers would face financial challenges acquiring James due to his $52 million salary, likely requiring a trade. But with a young roster lacking championship experience, adding James could be the missing piece. Given his strong ties to his hometown, finishing his career in Cleveland would be a fitting conclusion if the Lakers decide not to re-sign him after this season.
