After a standout 2025 season, Kyle Schwarber is expected to draw strong interest on the free-agent market, and the Philadelphia Phillies know they aren’t the only team pursuing him. According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the club already has a contingency plan in case Schwarber signs elsewhere.
Despite Schwarber’s age—33 next season—and his role as a full-time designated hitter, his market is expected to be broad. Philadelphia remains the most logical landing spot, but Passan reports that Kyle Tucker could become the Phillies’ preferred alternative if Schwarber departs.
“If Schwarber leaves Philadelphia,” Passan wrote in his offseason outlook, “Tucker makes plenty of sense, especially as the Phillies focus on getting younger, with 21-year-old Justin Crawford entering spring training as the likely favorite for the center-field job.”
Kyle Tucker Would Be a Major Addition if Schwarber Leaves
Schwarber produced enormous power during his four seasons in Philadelphia, finishing 2025 with a league-high 56 home runs. The size of his market could push the annual value of his next contract past $30 million, making it possible the Phillies decide not to match the top offers.
If that happens, Tucker would be a strong replacement. Widely viewed as the best player available this offseason, the 28-year-old spent seven seasons with the Houston Astros before completing his contract year with the Chicago Cubs. Though he has battled injuries recently, his upside makes him worth the risk.
Tucker capped his 2025 season hitting .266 with an .841 OPS, 22 home runs, 73 RBIs, and 25 steals in 136 games. A complete five-tool talent, he brings consistent contact, power, speed, and elite defense. He is a former Gold Glove winner, four-time All-Star, and two-time Silver Slugger—and he plays right field, one of the Phillies’ biggest needs.
Philadelphia’s Offseason Direction
Adding Tucker would be a major move for the Phillies, especially as they explore trading Nick Castellanos and the $20 million remaining on his contract. Clearing that salary could create room for Justin Crawford to take over center field full time and free resources for a new marquee signing.
This winter, the Phillies appear more aggressive and strategic than in recent years. They understand changes are needed to keep their World Series window open. Schwarber has been one of the most impactful players in the franchise’s recent history, but even they have limits to what they can spend.
If Schwarber signs elsewhere and the Phillies shift those funds toward Tucker instead, it could end up being the more beneficial long-term move—especially if they succeed in moving Castellanos.
Tucker’s expected contract, projected to exceed $400 million, would be massive. Still, securing one of MLB’s most dynamic outfielders for years to come might justify the investment.
