Philadelphia Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski has addressed growing speculation about the team’s plans should star slugger Kyle Schwarber ever leave the organization.
In a recent media appearance, Dombrowski made it clear that while the Phillies remain committed to keeping Schwarber in Philadelphia, the front office has contingency options — and one name in particular stands out.
“We love Kyle and want him here,” Dombrowski said. “But if circumstances ever change, Joc Pederson is a player I’d look at seriously. He’s a proven hitter, he’s clutch in October, and he brings the kind of energy that fits Philadelphia.”
Pederson, a two-time World Series champion and former All-Star, is known for his power from the left side of the plate and his postseason heroics with both the Dodgers and Braves. His ability to perform under pressure has made him a respected veteran presence across the league.
While Dombrowski emphasized that no move is currently planned, he confirmed that the Phillies’ scouting department continues to monitor other potential replacements should a lineup change become necessary.
“You always have to prepare for every scenario,” Dombrowski added. “We have our eyes on a few other experienced bats — guys like Brandon Belt, Cody Bellinger, and even Rhys Hoskins, who knows this clubhouse and this city very well.”
Rumors of outside interest in Schwarber surfaced earlier this offseason, but the 2022 home run leader recently reaffirmed his loyalty to the Phillies, saying, “Philly is home — the love here is massive.”
Still, Dombrowski’s comments reflect the front office’s trademark readiness to act swiftly if roster adjustments are needed.
The Phillies, who reached the postseason in three straight seasons, continue to balance experience with long-term roster planning. And while the idea of Schwarber leaving remains hypothetical, Pederson’s name now stands out as the first-choice successor should that day ever come.
“We’re built to compete now,” Dombrowski concluded. “If anything changes, we’ll make sure we have the right pieces in place to keep this team winning.”
