ST. LOUIS, Mo. — In a move that signals both respect for franchise history and a new direction for the future, St. Louis Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. has formally made an offer to franchise icon Yadier Molina, according to sources close to team discussions.
Molina, a two-time World Series champion and 10-time All-Star, retired after the 2022 season but has remained active in baseball through coaching in international competitions and managing in Puerto Rico. The reported offer is believed to involve a role within the Cardinals’ major league coaching staff — potentially even a bench coach or special assistant position — though specifics have not yet been confirmed.
DeWitt has spoken openly in recent months about re-establishing what he calls “Cardinal baseball identity,” and Molina has long been seen as the embodiment of that philosophy. His leadership, game calling, and clubhouse presence were considered irreplaceable during his 19 seasons behind the plate in St. Louis.
The offer comes at a time when the Cardinals are reassessing their coaching structure following a disappointing 2023 season and continued inconsistency in 2024. While current manager Oli Marmol remains under contract, the front office has made it clear that adjustments are being explored.
Molina has previously acknowledged that he would be open to returning to the organization if the role was the right fit, saying in a recent interview:
“St. Louis is home. I’d never close the door on helping the Cardinals — if it’s something that makes sense for both sides.”
The Cardinals have not issued an official statement, and Molina has not yet responded publicly. However, insiders suggest that conversations have been positive and that Molina’s competitive fire — combined with his deep ties to St. Louis — make this offer a serious one.
If an agreement is reached, Molina would become one of the most prominent former Cardinals to rejoin the organization in a leadership role since Albert Pujols’ return as a special assistant.
Further updates are expected as discussions progress. Fans, already nostalgic for Molina’s presence, are watching closely — hopeful that one of the most beloved figures in club history may soon be back in the Cardinals’ dugout.
