Last week, we looked at Doug Armstrong’s best moves through the 2017-18 season. Now, as the St. Louis Blues prepare for Armstrong’s final year as general manager, we continue with the second half of his most impactful transactions. The focus here is on decisions that paid off right away rather than those that took years to show results.
2018-19: The Ryan O’Reilly Trade
Armstrong entered the 2018 offseason aiming to land a top center, free cap space, and keep his best prospects. He accomplished all three by acquiring Ryan O’Reilly from Buffalo in exchange for Patrik Berglund, Vladimir Sobotka, Tage Thompson, and a first-round pick. The trade was transformational—O’Reilly won both the Selke and Conn Smythe trophies in 2019 while leading the Blues to their first Stanley Cup. He later became team captain, making this arguably Armstrong’s finest move.
2019-20: Extending Brayden Schenn
Before raising their championship banner, the Blues signed Brayden Schenn to an eight-year extension. The move was questioned at the time due to Alex Pietrangelo’s looming contract, but Schenn has remained productive and consistent. Now captain, he continues to be a cornerstone as the Blues move into a new era.
2020-21: Signing Mike Hoffman
With Vladimir Tarasenko sidelined by injury, Armstrong brought in Mike Hoffman to bolster the offense. Hoffman delivered exactly as intended, scoring 17 goals—seven on the power play—during his single season in St. Louis.
2021-22: Trading for Pavel Buchnevich
Armstrong dealt Sammy Blais and a draft pick to the New York Rangers for Pavel Buchnevich. The move was a clear win as Buchnevich blossomed into a consistent scorer in St. Louis, posting seasons of 30, 26, and 27 goals. Meanwhile, Blais failed to score during his time in New York.
2022-23: Choosing Jordan Binnington
After Ville Husso briefly overtook Jordan Binnington in goal, Armstrong faced a decision. He traded Husso to Detroit rather than paying him starter’s money, reaffirming Binnington as the team’s No. 1. The choice has proven correct, with Husso struggling since while Binnington remains a big-game performer for the Blues.
2023-24: Zachary Bolduc’s Call-Up
With little movement in trades or free agency, Armstrong’s best move this year was promoting prospect Zachary Bolduc. In 25 games, he scored five goals and added much-needed energy during a playoff push. Although the Blues fell short, Bolduc’s development carried into the following season, where he scored 19 goals and helped St. Louis back into the postseason.
2024-25: Offer Sheets for Holloway and Broberg
In a bold move, Armstrong signed Edmonton Oilers players Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg to offer sheets. Both joined the Blues and made an immediate impact—Broberg scored eight goals with 29 points, while Holloway recorded 26 goals and 63 points. They quickly became core pieces of the roster, highlighting Armstrong’s willingness to take risks.
3025-26: Signing Pius Suter
Although the season has yet to begin, Armstrong’s standout move so far has been signing Pius Suter. Coming off a 25-goal season with Vancouver, Suter adds depth and scoring potential. Whether playing on the second or third line, he has the chance to become a key contributor, especially alongside skilled forwards like Jordan Kyrou and Dylan Holloway.
Final Recap
Across his tenure, Armstrong consistently worked to strengthen the Blues. Not every move succeeded, but his commitment was undeniable. With Alexander Steen set to take over as GM next summer, Armstrong leaves behind a strong legacy of bold, impactful decisions.
