Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz faced a heartbreaking moment on Sunday, choosing to play just one day after the passing of his older sister, Genelis De La Cruz Sanchez.
To honor her memory, De La Cruz wrote “RIP” on his cleats and cap during the game against the Chicago Cubs. In the sixth inning, he hit a home run—his 12th of the season and 50th of his career. As he rounded the bases, he tapped his chest over his heart, pointed to the sky, clapped, and formed a heart with his hands in tribute.
Family members in the Dominican Republic confirmed that Sanchez had died after dealing with long-term health issues. De La Cruz, 23, did not speak to reporters before or after the game, which the Cubs won 7–3. Despite the loss, he delivered a strong performance, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two runs scored, and one walk.
Reds manager Terry Francona explained before the game that the decision to play was entirely De La Cruz’s. “We just told him we’ll support whatever he needs. He wanted to play today, and then we’ll go from there.” After the game, Francona added, “It’s a hard situation, but he wanted to be there for the team. We’re reminded of what really matters, and everyone tried to look out for him.”
The Reds will begin a three-game home series against the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday, with De La Cruz slated to bat third in the lineup.
