Vikings Sign Former Lions Offensive Tackle, Release Rookie Defensive Lineman
The Minnesota Vikings have signed veteran offensive tackle Matt Nelson and released rookie defensive lineman Alexander Williams, who was waived with an injury designation. This marks the second consecutive day the team has made roster adjustments at the lower end of their 90-man squad.
Nelson, 29, played in 43 games for the Detroit Lions from 2020 to 2023, starting 14 times — 11 of those during the 2021 season. He mainly played at right tackle and was also used as an extra lineman in heavy formations. Originally from Iowa, Nelson played college football for the Iowa Hawkeyes and joined the NFL as an undrafted free agent with Detroit in 2019. He spent last offseason with the New York Giants.
Williams, who joined the Vikings in May, is a 6’7″, 291-pound lineman who spent time at Ohio State, Vanderbilt, and Middle Tennessee State. Despite his size, injuries limited his college playing time and productivity. During offseason practices with the Vikings, he drew attention largely because of his physical stature.
