St. Louis, MO – November 12, 2025
St. Louis Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt Jr. has expressed his disappointment following Nolan Arenado’s decision to part ways with the team after five seasons, calling the veteran third baseman “a key piece” of the organization’s success and leadership.
In an interview following the GM meetings in Las Vegas, DeWitt said he had hoped Arenado would finish his career in St. Louis, emphasizing the impact he has made both on and off the field.
“Nolan has been an incredible player and a true professional,” DeWitt said. “We wanted him to remain a Cardinal for the rest of his career. His work ethic, leadership, and dedication are things every team values.”
Arenado’s departure comes amid a transitional period for the Cardinals, as President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom continues to reshape the roster and plan for the team’s future. Despite trade talks being handled with mutual respect, DeWitt admitted that seeing a star of Arenado’s caliber leave was difficult.
“It’s never easy to see a player like Nolan go,” DeWitt continued. “He gave his heart to this team, and we’ll always appreciate his contributions to the Cardinals organization.”
Arenado, 34, struggled with injuries in the 2025 season, hitting .237 with 12 home runs in 107 games, but remains one of baseball’s elite defensive infielders.
The Cardinals owner added that while the organization respects Arenado’s decision, he hopes fans will remember the third baseman’s achievements and the competitive spirit he brought to Busch Stadium.
“He’ll always be part of the Cardinals family,” DeWitt concluded. “We wish him nothing but success in the next chapter of his career.”
Arenado joined St. Louis in 2021 via trade from the Colorado Rockies and became a cornerstone of the lineup, earning multiple All-Star and Gold Glove honors during his time with the club.
