BREAKING NEWS: Phillies Ready to Sign Star Slugger If Kyle Schwarber Leaves

Phillies Urged to Pursue Star Slugger if Kyle Schwarber Departs

November 11, 2025 — Philadelphia, PA

With the Philadelphia Phillies missing out on a World Series title last season and Kyle Schwarber entering free agency, the team faces a major decision regarding its offensive future. Schwarber, one of the league’s premier power hitters, is expected to draw interest from several teams, potentially leaving a significant void in Philadelphia’s lineup.

While the Phillies could make an aggressive push to re-sign Schwarber, reports suggest they may also explore alternatives. MLB insider Bob Nightengale recently noted that Fernando Tatis Jr. could become available via trade, and FanSided’s Christopher Kline encouraged Phillies President Dave Dombrowski to make a bold move for the Padres star if Schwarber departs.

“If Schwarber leaves, that puts immense pressure on Dombrowski to land another impact bat,” Kline wrote. “Tatis’ contract is lengthy, but its annual value fits within Philadelphia’s payroll structure. It’s the kind of big swing the Phillies could make.”

Adding Tatis would provide both elite production and a solution to the Phillies’ ongoing outfield challenges. Despite last year’s addition of Harrison Bader, the team still lacks consistent outfield offense. Tatis, a three-time All-Star and two-time Platinum Glove winner, could immediately fill that gap.

The financial commitment would be significant. Tatis is under contract for nine more years, worth $292 million in total, with salaries escalating from $20.7 million next season to $36.7 million annually in the later years. However, his early-year salary levels are viewed as reasonable for a player of his caliber.

While no free agent can perfectly replace Schwarber’s home run power, Tatis’ .868 career OPS and all-around skillset make him one of the few players capable of matching his impact.

If Schwarber signs elsewhere, expect Philadelphia to consider all options — including trades for stars like Tatis — as Dombrowski looks to keep the Phillies competitive and maintain their power-heavy identity heading into the 2026 season.
