Chaim Bloom Addresses Sonny Gray’s Future With the St. Louis Cardinals

As the MLB offseason begins to take shape, speculation about potential trades and roster moves has started to circulate across the league. For the St. Louis Cardinals, much of the talk centers on whether the club will move some of its veteran players — including starting pitcher Sonny Gray.
Cardinals President of Baseball Operations Chaim Bloom recently addressed those rumors during an appearance on STL Sports Central, where he discussed Gray’s future and the team’s broader offseason approach.
“You can never have too much starting pitching,” Bloom said. “Sonny is here, and we value him highly. He was brought in for a reason, and he’s certainly done his part. We’d be thrilled if he’s with us in 2026. That said, given where we are, we’ll always keep our eyes and ears open and be willing to listen.”
Gray, a three-time All-Star, signed with St. Louis as a free agent before the 2024 season. In his two years with the team, he has made 60 starts and posted a 4.07 ERA. Despite the Cardinals’ struggles in recent seasons, Gray has been a steady and reliable presence in the rotation, recording a 27–17 record since joining the club.
Keeping Gray would provide much-needed stability for St. Louis, especially as Bloom looks to rebuild the roster and pitching depth. His consistent performance has made him one of the few bright spots in an otherwise uneven stretch for the Cardinals.
While Bloom acknowledged the team’s willingness to listen to trade offers, his comments suggest that moving Gray is far from certain.
“Sonny’s done everything we’ve asked,” Bloom added. “We’d be very happy to have him back next season.”
For now, it appears the Cardinals are keeping all options on the table — but retaining Gray could give the rotation a proven anchor heading into 2026.
