The Philadelphia Phillies face a major decision this offseason: whether they can bring back Kyle Schwarber as he hits free agency following the end of his four-year, $79 million contract.
Schwarber, one of the top names on the market, is drawing interest from multiple teams, but according to MLB.com insider Todd Zolecki, the Phillies’ chances of re-signing him are “really good” as free agency begins.
“I think they’re really good,” Zolecki said during a segment on MLB Network. “His teammates want him back, the coaches want him back, Rob Thomson wants him back, the front office wants him back. And most importantly, Phillies owner John Middleton wants him back.”
Keeping Schwarber as the team’s designated hitter would be a major boost for the Phillies’ offense. While the club still has other roster needs to address, losing Schwarber’s power bat would be a significant setback.
Schwarber is expected to command a contract worth at least $30 million per year, reflecting his recent production. The 32-year-old slugger is coming off the best season of his career, hitting 56 home runs, driving in 132 RBIs, and finishing top three in National League MVP voting.
The Phillies remain optimistic about reaching a new deal, but they’ll face competition from other clubs willing to spend big. With free agency just beginning, negotiations could take time, but early signs point toward Philadelphia being in a strong position to retain their MVP-caliber hitter.
