According to cops and the retired player, former NFL receiver Braylon Edwards saved an unconscious man who was being attacked at a YMCA locker room in Farmington Hills, Michigan.
After a record-breaking collegiate career at Michigan, Edwards, who played well for the Cleveland Browns and New York Jets, told WDIV TV that he heard a dispute on Friday regarding music being played too loudly.
“You can hear some pushing and shoving as the noise level rises—you know what fighting sounds like. Edwards stated, “I hear some scuffles and some fistfights. However, it was the sound of a thump that caused me to get up. That’s what caused me to change my mind.
Edwards claimed he acted quickly after witnessing a young man about to slam the elder man’s head against the counter. He said, “I grabbed him and subdued him.”
As for the culprit, Farmington Hills police characterized him as a 20-year-old man. Edwards reportedly interfered when the victim was already bleeding and unconscious.
According to a police statement, Edwards “pulled the suspect off the injured man, at which time the suspect attacked [Edwards], who was able to fight the suspect off.”
Police say the guy ran away from the area on foot but was apprehended without any problems.
In the announcement, Farmington Hills police chief Jeff King stated, “I’d like to thank the good Samaritan for taking action to stop the suspect in the midst of a vicious assault.” Edwards was not given a name.
Edwards gave a matter-of-fact description of his conduct in an interview with WDIV. “In the end, I was just doing what you do,” he remarked.
According to authorities, the elderly man’s health is serious but stable.
