Leeds United defeated Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 on Friday night at Hillsborough, moving them up to second place in the Championship (8 March). After 12 Championship games in 2024, the Whites have now recorded 11 victories, 1 tie, and are now undefeated.
Even though Leicester still has a game in hand, Daniel Farke’s team has narrowed the lead at the top to just two points. Despite having played one fewer game than Leeds, Ipswich Town is only one point behind them.
Just before the interval, Junior Firpo’s excellent left-wing delivery found Patrick Bamford, who tapped in from close range to give the Whites the lead. Wilfried Gnonto scored an incredible goal in the second half, featuring Georginio Rutter in a masterful, flowing move.
After the game, Gnonto called Rutter, 21, a “quality” player, citing his 14 assists for the Whites in all competitions this season.
“I was just running and focusing on the first touch and then of course the finish because he [Rutter] has the quality and he saw before,” Gnonto remarked following the game.

For the Whites, Rutter has been nothing short of spectacular. This season, he has contributed six goals and thirteen assists in the Championship and has been essential to Farkke’s success.
Patrick Bamford is another player that merits mentioning in the same sentence. The England striker has been dealing with injuries for the last 18 months or so, but he has bounced back this season, scoring seven goals in nine Championship games.
Leeds will have nine days off before playing Millwall, and then there will be an international break. The players will therefore have more time to heal. It will be the perfect opportunity to get the injured players back and healthy.
