The Pittsburgh Steelers are making room in their outside linebacker lineup because T.J. Watt sustained an injury that will prevent him from playing in the Wild Card stage of the playoffs.
Watt will miss the Steelers’ trip to Buffalo to play the Bills in the opening round of the playoffs, head coach Mike Tomlin confirmed. Alex Highsmith will be replaced by veteran Markus Golden and rookie Nick Herbig, with Kyron Johnson providing depth off the bench.
To give themselves even more depth during the week, the Steelers are now expanding their practice squad. The team declared that they had released Nate Meadors and added David Perales to their P-Squad.Perales, a Fresno State rookie who was not selected in the draft, worked with the Steelers during the summer. In order to add more spots to their practice squad, he has alternated between being on the team and being released since joining them at the start of the season.
Perales totaled 22.5 sacks while at Fresno State, with 11.5 coming in his senior year.
With his grade 2 MCL sprain, Watt is currently anticipated to miss a “few” games, but the Steelers will probably be playing it week by week as they advance through the playoffs.
