We get a huge upset in the Big Ten once or twice a season. When a top contender travels, one of the teams that is having trouble in the standings surprises them. It has previously been done by programs like Penn State, Nebraska, and Minnesota.
It was demonstrated by Michigan on Wednesday.
Although the Wolverines were significant underdogs going into the game, they performed incredibly well right away and eventually led at the half. Then, after struggling for weeks, Michigan managed to build on its early success and shocked the Badgers 72-68 at home. With 12 points and six rebounds throughout the game, Tarris Reed was a major contributor to the victory. And Dug McDaniel scored sixteen points.
With the victory, Michigan’s record improved to 8-15 overall and 3-9 in Big Ten play. In general, the Wolverines’ standings won’t alter significantly as a result of the victory. It is too late in the season for this to affect the team’s chances of making the playoffs. Fans of the Wolverines are hoping that this emotional victory translates to more victories in the future. Maybe the club can get some momentum and have a successful season finale. That would be significant following the previous two months of play.
Conversely, Wisconsin dropped to 16-7 overall and 8-4 in Big Ten action after the defeat. The Badgers have now lost three games in a row, and their remarkable record over the previous seven games is just 3-4. More importantly, Wisconsin’s defeat fell two games back from Purdue in the conference standings, which is likely an insurmountable margin with just eight games remaining and Wisconsin’s forthcoming slate. That won’t be easy to stomach.
