Since I’ve been a Magpies fan for forty years, the team has had some good, some bad, and some uninteresting loan players. To be honest, I wasn’t concerned about it at initially. But over the years, a few loan players have worn a Notts shirt and have caught my eye—Jorge Grant and Ryan Yates in 2017; others include Callum McGregor in 2013 and Jack Grealish.
When Grealish made his home league debut—I think it was against Tranmere Rovers, but I could be wrong—the seasoned defenders’ only chance of stopping the young striker was to kick him or stamp on him. But most of the time, rival players were unable to approach him, and occasionally it
Another gifted player who excelled for Notts is Callum McGregor, who scored 14 goals across all competitions during his loan spell. He went on to win international honors with Scotland once more. His Celtic trophy cabinet is overflowing with goodies.
Both Ryan Yates and Jorge Grant, who hail from over the Trent, had fantastic games for the Black & White Stripes. Grant seemed to shine when Yates was on the team; but, I felt that Yates lost some of his edge or flare after being summoned back to Forest. Grant is still with Hearts in 2024, but Yates is still with the Reds.
There’s little doubt that these four loan acquisition kinds will benefit Notts County. The Bad occurs when players—like Ryan Yates—are called up by their parent club in January. There was animosity between the Magpies and Reds as a result of this call back to the City Ground. Everything has been restored. However, since then, (I don’t believe) another young Forest player has crossed the Trent.
What interests me is whether loans are impeding the development of young Notts players. Many young players are playing men’s football while they are out on loan. However, the coaching staff at Notts ought to be trying to get these individuals into the senior team. Are they hoping to be on the starting squad?
