GREEN BAY, Wisconsin: To make it work, new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley of the Green Bay Packers will bring in a new strategy and a number of new assistant coaches. Given his experience and the way he taught at Boston College, it has always been clear that Hafley would implement a 4-3 defensive in Green Bay. When the Packers hired Dom Capers in 2009, they went to a 3-4 scheme. Following that, Greg Williams, the defensive coordinator for the passing game and coach of the cornerbacks and defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery of the Packers, and coach Kirk Olivadotti of the inside linebackers went their own ways. Hafley has had little trouble swiftly covering the voids on the coaching staff, despite not having been engaged in the NFL since 2018.
Jason Rebrovich, the defensive line coach, was brought on in 2022 to oversee the outside linebackers. He was renamed as a pass-rush specialist in 2023, but he kept the outside linebackers as his primary emphasis. In addition to working with Preston Smith and Rashan Gary, he will also supervise Kenny Clark and the other defensive tackles in his capacity as defensive line coach. But he’ll be concentrating on Lukas Van Ness, Gary, Smith, and the other defensive ends. Vince Oghobaase, an assistant defensive lineman, will assist in replacing Jerry Montgomery, who left the Packers in 2015 to become a member of the coaching staff of the New England Patriots, led by head coach Jerod Mayo. The Packers rank bottom in the NFL in yards allowed per rush under LaFleur’s leadership While the entire defensive line will be under Rebrovich’s supervision, Oghobaase’s focus presumably will be on the interior linemen such as Clark and Devonte Wyatt.
In 2022, defensive line coach Jason Rebrovich was hired to manage the outside linebackers. In 2023, he changed his title to “pass-rush specialist,” but his main focus remained on outside linebackers. As defensive line coach, he will oversee Kenny Clark and the other defensive linemen in addition to working with Preston Smith and Rashan Gary. However, he will be focusing on Smith, Gary, Lukas Van Ness, and the other defensive ends. Assisting in Jerry Montgomery’s absence will be assistant defensive lineman Vince Oghobaase. Montgomery departed the Packers in 2015 to join head coach Jerod Mayo’s coaching staff in New England. The Packers’ yards allowed rank worst in the NFL.
